Well that was fun! Our first Weston Tech Meet Up was great last night with around 20 people turning up to meet each other and the Bristol-based TechSpark team, and to hear lightning talks from some interesting and useful people – more on them later! And it’s always good to have the opportunity to show the bright and airy coworking spaces and offices at The Stable to a new audience, I love a good tour, me…
Who came to the first Weston Tech Meet Up?
The evening was run in conjunction with TechSPARK, an organisation that serves the tech cluster in Bristol, Bath, Weston and as far north as Gloucester and Cheltenham (while obviously having global reach through its site) with news, recruitment and funding and event opportunities. Ben Shorrock and Sarah Keates came down from TechSPARK HQ in Bristol to introduce themselves and the benefits of TechSPARK, check out their site for more on that front.
It was great to see local success stories here to offer their financial support to any viable local business ideas; people at the beginning of their tech careers here for info and advice; and those working across water and utilities tech, music tech, app development, VR and loads more.
Patrick Cutliffe (a Google Digital Trainer and founder of BuzzStart Digital) also popped back. Patrick led the one-to-ones at our last Digital Garage event and we hope to see him back at our next Google Digital Garage event on 12 April (sign up for free on that link). (Sign up on our Events page if interested in joining this free Google training event.)
After a bit of wine, cheese and chatting, we moved on to a few minutes apiece with our local speakers.
Guest Speaker – Marina Traversari from Oracle
Marina Traversari was the first of our lightning speakers. Weston-based Marina moved to Weston from Bristol a couple of years ago (for the town’s obvious benefits like myself!) and manages the Oracle Cloud Accelerator, a global organisation whose UK base is in Bristol.
To quote their site (I’m not sure I could paraphrase this one in a way that made any sense!): “The Oracle Start Up Cloud Accelerator is not your traditional accelerator program—it’s a next-generation acceleration initiative. The program focuses on reimagining enterprise innovation through partnerships with start ups that foster codevelopment and co-innovation, where we all win.”
More simply put, Oracle takes on a new group of start ups every six months, supports them intensively through six months of growth and then for a further year and beyond. Marina is looking for new cloud-based initiatives for the next intakes so, look them up if this is you and you are keen.
Guest Speaker – Matt West Entrepreneur Devel. Manager at NatWest
Our second speaker was Matt West, another pioneer who left Bristol recently to move to sunny Weston (are you seeing a pattern here?). Matt is responsible for delivering the NatWest Entrepreneurship strategy across the South West of England, working with growth- minded people to help them to achieve their goals and ambitions by helping them to join up the dots as it were. He also works with Bristol's Entrepreneurial Spark, which supports and accelerates t he growth of start-ups. Matt is also trying to change people’s perceptions of what banking is about, and he’s doing a great job – he was recently awarded the IntoUniversity Corporate Volunteer award for the UK, thanks to his work with young people to help engage their entrepreneurial mindset. En bref – another great (and local) speaker and approachable bloke and we’re thrilled that Matt’s supporting what we’re doing at The Stable; it’s likely he’ll be back at our Small Business Acceleration event (with the West of England Growth Hub) on April 12 and at other entrepreneur and business development related events that will run here throughout this year and beyond.
